Out of Africa: Phil’s Report

January 2017 marked my 7th year traveling to Africa to buy coffee, and although I’m now quite comfortable traveling in Ethiopia and Kenya, I feel like I’m still just scratching the surface of understanding coffee in these two dynamic countries. The potential in both countries is so enormous – it’s simply astounding. But really I

The Tale of Jose Martinez

I first met Jose Martinez in November of 2014, you can read about my first encounter with Jose here. I feel fortunate to work with some passionate and hard working coffee producers. Opening Soon – Hudson Block, Downtown Calgary

As proud Calgarians, alumni of the University of Calgary, and with our first location inside the Calgary Farmer’s Market, it would be safe to say that both Phil and I are ecstatic to finally find our next Phil & Sebastian cafe location in the heart of downtown Calgary. We had long been asked by our customers (and eager commercial real estate brokers) about when we would open a permanent Phil & Sebastian downtown cafe. We dabbled downtown with a couple of pop-up locations: first inside Holt Renfrew, then outdoors on Stephen Ave and 3rd St. SW.

Over the years, we have looked at countless downtown locations but none truly offered what we were looking for: a balance of character, presence, and traffic. Finally, we feel we have honed in on a building that has all of those characteristics and more: Hudson Block.

Located on the corner of Stephen Avenue and Centre Street, we’ll be sharing the building with our new neighbours, ATB Financial.

Construction on this project begins later in September, and we are projecting a Winter 2016 opening. We look forward to sharing more progress as the time comes. As always, we thank you for being a fan and for supporting our local business.

Sunday Night Standup at P&S Mission

We are proud to host a new series at Phil & Sebastian Mission, Sunday Night Standup. The aim is to showcase local comedians in the aptly-named “coffeehouse” style, which varies slightly from the type of comedy performances you’d find at a comedy club (sometimes referred to as “Las Vegas style”) — the coffee house format lends itself more to storytelling in a bright and inviting atmosphere. The first in this monthly series will take place on Sunday, September 11th at 7:00pm.

The lineup for the inaugural Sunday Night Standup will include:

X92.9 Radio Host Alex Carr

X92.9 Radio Host Alex Carr
